Project Results
The Grant of Charles University Nr. 288/2002 “Written Sources of Czech History of the Middle Ages” was assigned in the Year 2002. Originally, it was planned for three years with the goal to make survey and analysis of sources for the time of the Přemyslide Bohemia and to create conditions for the dealing with the written sources in the time of the rulers of the Luxembourg dynasty in Bohemia (before the Hussite revolution). In this respect the basic survey of written sources of the Přemyslide time was made, the heuristic was finished and partial problems of source criticism were being solved. The individual types of sources were included into the historical development of Czech society and into the literacy in the Czech Lands. The studies were oriented mainly to the problems of the beginning of written production in general, and to the memorial texts hitherto only treated marginally (the necrologia, necrological annals, martyrologia, calendaria, traditional records, charters, false documents, catalogues), further to the charters, their linguistic and stylistic points, to the principal sources of the historical writing, their value as the historical sources and their function, inclusive of their reliability and possibility to exploit them for historical work. The sources were dealt with in the large context of the social and political development inclusive of their role and placement in the larger context of the history of medieval culture. In addition to these topics, there was treated the common set of problems of the definition, classification and typology of the historical sources with great emphasis on the medieval writing sources and development of their editions (in the manuscript). The results of the grant were presented on the scientific conferences and congresses in the Czech Republic and abroad and published, or prepared on the press, in professional volumes and proceedings, they are partially used in teaching the sources theory. In this way, in two years the conditions for the writing of a basic handbook of historical sources of the Přemyslide period were created, the preparation of the handbook was planned for the third year of the project solution. A special study on the written sources under the Přemyslides is being prepared and will be finished this year for the volume to the anniversary in 2006 of the end of the reign of the Přemyslide dynasty.
